Grafton Inn

The Grafton Inn is one of the oldest operating inns in the US, having first opened its doors in 1801. The inn was renovated by the Windham Foundation in 1965, restoring it as a gracious country inn and ensuring that this important piece of the Grafton economy would survive many years into the future, attracting tourists to the area, creating jobs, and generally supporting the area through the inn’s economic activity.

The Grafton Inn was in poor shape, both financially and physically, before the Windham Foundation took it over. Grafton itself was in decline, with its population shrinking by more than two-thirds by the time of the Great Depression. Changes in traffic patterns, cemented by the construction of the interstate highway system, and the advent of modern motels, conspired to endanger the Inn’s viability completely.

The Foundation’s renovations transformed the property and enabled it to compete again for guests. Today the inn includes 45 rooms, suites, and guest houses that provide a unique combination of historic charm and modern amenities. The Inn’s on-site dining outlets, the 1801 Tavern & Pine Room Bar and Phelps Barn Pub, offer visitors and guests hearty, seasonally-rotating menus alongside a well-stocked selection of fine wines, Vermont spirits, and craft beers. The Inn has also quickly become a highly sought after Vermont wedding venue, hosting elopements and wedding celebrations that span every season.

The Inn employs more than 50 people.
